Seven years have elapsed since the last meeting between Chelsea and Barcelona. The two are set to renew one of the most intense of rivalries when they clash at Stamford Bridge this Tuesday. This will be a round five encounter, and we have a prediction for the match below.

This will be the second time in the teams’ history that they clash in a league/group stage match. The first ended in a 3-2 aggregate win for Chelsea back in 2006/07. Heading into this game, 12th placed Chelsea will be looking to rise into the top eight with a win. They’ve so far claimed two victories in their opening four matches. Barcelona have also managed two wins in their first four league stage matches. One of them was in England against Newcastle United, and they will be targeting a third victory.

For the first time since 2022/23, Chelsea are taking part in the Champions League. Last season they won the Conference League and went on to clinch the Club World Cup. They have the pedigree, and featuring in their 20th UCL campaign, they will feel they have what it takes to stand up to Barcelona. Against Spanish teams, they’ve lost just two of 16 league stage meetings, winning seven. Facing Barcelona at home, the Blues won four of seven and lost only once. Chelsea and Barcelona have won two matches apiece in the UCL league phase.

Stamford Bridge, casa del Chelsea

Analisi delle Squadre

Chelsea

Chelsea enter the game with several notable absentees across the squad. Gabriel Slonina, Raheem Sterling and Dário Essugo are all ineligible for Champions League selection, with Essugo also recovering from surgery. Roméo Lavia remains sidelined with a muscle strain, Cole Palmer is managing groin issues and Levi Colwill continues his recovery from a cruciate ligament tear. Despite these losses, Enzo Maresca is expected to keep faith with the structure that has carried them through the domestic and European schedule. Robert Sánchez should start in goal behind a back four of Reece James, Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah and Marc Cucurella.

Chelsea are coming off a 2-0 win against Burnley; for the seventh time in their last 10 matches, they scored two or more goals. They haven't failed to score at all in those 10 matches, a run they will badly need to continue here.

The Blues continue to impress even in the league: against Burnley, it was the third consecutive victory, all obtained without conceding a goal. A performance that Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca also praised at the end of the match: "It was a tough game for many reasons: after the international break, at 12 noon, away on a small pitch. It was therefore an insidious game, and the way the players competed was good, with another clean sheet. Overall, we deserved to win and we are satisfied".

Chelsea offer their own intriguing dynamics. This squad has the youngest average starting XI in this season’s Champions League and no team has started more players aged twenty-three or younger. Estêvão’s emergence has been particularly eye-catching, with the teenager scoring in both of his opening two Champions League starts. A third would place him behind only Kylian Mbappé in terms of the youngest players to score in their first three starts. Chelsea also retain a formidable home record in Europe. They have lost only two of their last sixty-one UEFA home league or group matches and remain unbeaten in sixteen since falling to Valencia in 2019.

In Palmer’s absence, a number of attacking options are available for Enzo Maresca. Key among them is Joao Pedro, who has seven goal contributions. For a player with 45 goals in his 1-1 appearances for Chelsea, his absence is a big blow.

Pedro Neto scored three goals in his last six games, and is a candidate for a starting spot to try and open his Champions League account.

Barcelona

Barcelona travel without key figures. Marc-André ter Stegen remains out with a back problem, Pedri is unavailable due to a muscle injury and Gavi continues his long-term recovery following arthroscopy. Wojciech Szczęsny is expected to start in goal once again. Hansi Flick should maintain a back four of Jules Koundé, Ronald Araújo, Pau Cubarsí and Alejandro Balde, with Frenkie de Jong, Fermín López and Dani Olmo operating in midfield.

Barcelona are coming off a resounding 4-0 win against Athletic Bilbao in La Liga. It was a rare occasion when the visitors recorded a clean sheet, and they’ll hope for another strong outing here.

The Blaugrana, however, recover in the league and stroll past Athletic with a clear 4-0 at their return to the Spotify Camp Nou. A solid performance from the Catalans, which Barcelona coach Hansi Flick also highlighted in the post-match: "I feel very, very optimistic. I have faith and I believe in the team. I think we have a group of the highest quality. We never complain about the absence of a player, we manage every situation… everyone wants to give 100% for this team, and that's the best thing a coach can have".

Hansi Flick’s team arrive with several clear strengths. Barcelona have scored in twenty-four consecutive Champions League matches, producing sixty-seven goals across that run. Flick has never seen one of his sides fail to score in the competition, whether at Bayern Munich or Barcelona. Their matches have also been chaotic, with ninety-six goals scored in their last twenty Champions League outings, an astonishing average of 4.8 per game.

The most surprising stat in the Barcelona team is that this season, Robert Lewandowski hasn’t scored in the Champions League. Well, the Pole has spent considerable time out injured, only playing 120 minutes in the competition this season. He has 105 goals in this competition, which only places him behind the iconic duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Leading the Barcelona attack, this season he has eight goals and will be looking to grab some more in this match.

Lamine Yamal will be another top player to watch in the Barca attack. The Spaniard got his 12th and 13th goal contributions in the 4-0 win over Athletic.

Marcus Rashford is in doubt. The English winger did not play in the last round of LaLiga due to illness and it is not certain that he will recover in time for the match at Stamford Bridge. He could be replaced by Ferran Torres, who decided the last league round with a brace.

Barcelona have also been on a fine scoring run. They’ve scored in all their last 10 matches, and in seven, they managed two or more goals. The Spanish side, however, has one clean sheet only in those 10 matches.

Statistiche Chiave e Precedenti

Chelsea and Barcelona meet at Stamford Bridge with both sides level on seven points after four matches, each recording two wins, one draw and one defeat. Chelsea’s league phase has been defined by inconsistency, beginning with a 3-1 loss at Bayern Munich before narrow wins over Benfica and a commanding 5-1 display against Ajax. A late setback away to Qarabağ left them frustrated on Matchday 4. Barcelona opened impressively with victory at Newcastle but followed it with a home defeat to PSG. Their response was emphatic in a 6-1 win against Olympiacos, although another high-scoring draw followed as they were held 3-3 by Club Brugge in Belgium.

The rivalry between these clubs is one of the richest in modern European competition. Chelsea have lost only one of their last nine Champions League meetings with Barcelona, although that defeat came in their most recent encounter in March 2018, when Lionel Messi inspired a 3-0 win at Camp Nou. Chelsea have also been a formidable opponent at Stamford Bridge, where Barcelona have won just once in eight attempts, a 2-1 success in February 2006. Their last four visits to west London have produced two draws and two Chelsea wins. Across their full European history the sides remain level, each winning four times in fourteen matches.

Barcelona’s recent record against English clubs is strong. Since 2013-14 they have lost only twice away to Premier League opposition in the Champions League, falling to Manchester City in 2016 and Liverpool in 2019. English teams in general have dominated Spanish opposition recently with nine wins from the last ten Champions League meetings, the only exception being Barcelona’s 2-1 victory at Newcastle in September. Since then English sides have recorded four consecutive clean-sheet victories against La Liga opponents.

Three times in the last five meetings in the Champions League, Chelsea and Barcelona played to draws. The two are also coming off identical runs in the opening four league stage matches, and their most recent ended in draws.

Confronto storico Chelsea vs Barcelona in Champions League

Pronostico

This will be one of the top matches lined up in the Champions League in this round. Both sides will feel equal to the task, and it looks like a game to be defined by fine margins.

Chelsea’s youth, energy and strong home form give them confidence, while Barcelona’s firepower, long scoring streak and recent proficiency against English opposition make them equally dangerous.
